Freeze/Unfreeze Addresses
Temporarily restrict token transfers for specific addresses for security, compliance, or dispute resolution.
What is Account Freezing?
Freezing an account temporarily prevents that address from sending or receiving tokens. This powerful feature requires freeze authority and should be used responsibly. Common use cases:
- Security Response: Freeze compromised or suspicious accounts
- Regulatory Compliance: Meet legal requirements for regulated tokens
- Dispute Resolution: Temporarily freeze during investigations
- Smart Contract Issues: Prevent exploitation during fixes
Freeze Account
Prevent an address from transferring tokens. The account can still receive tokens and view balance, but cannot send or trade.
Unfreeze Account
Restore full functionality to a frozen account. The address regains ability to send and trade tokens normally.

⚠️ Use Responsibly
Freezing accounts is a powerful action that can significantly impact users. Only use when necessary and justified:
- • Document the reason for every freeze action
- • Communicate with affected users when possible
- • Have clear policies on freeze/unfreeze procedures
- • Avoid arbitrary or punitive freezing
- • Unfreeze as soon as issue is resolved
Legal Considerations
- • Freezing may have legal implications in some jurisdictions
- • Ensure compliance with local regulations
- • Consider consulting legal counsel for regulated tokens
- • Maintain audit trail of all freeze/unfreeze actions
- • Have transparent policies in your terms of service
Best Practices
- • Implement multi-sig for freeze authority on serious projects
- • Keep detailed logs of all freeze/unfreeze actions
- • Set up alerts for freeze events
- • Review frozen accounts periodically
- • Have clear escalation procedures
- • Consider time-limited freezes where appropriate
Requirements
You must have freeze authority for the token to freeze/unfreeze accounts. This authority is separate from mint authority and can be revoked independently. If freeze authority has been revoked, no one can freeze accounts (enhancing decentralization).
